We Are All Witnesses

By Pastor Andre Butler

It goes without saying that Resurrection Day is the most important day of the year for Christians. Without the resurrection of Jesus Christ, there is no salvation, without salvation there is no Christianity.

As the Bible teaches in Romans 10:9, 10, an individual must not only confess Jesus as Lord, but they also must believe that God has raised him from the dead to be saved. This illustrates that the heart of the gospel message is that Jesus rose from the dead.

In the Book of Acts one word seemed to be used repeatedly to describe the followers of Jesus, witnesses. The 11 Apostles immediately set out to pick one of those that had been with them from the beginning of Jesus' ministry, who had heard what he said, saw what he did, and knew what they knew, to be a replacement for Judas.

In Peter's first message on the day of Pentecost, his grand finale was that Jesus was no longer dead but alive and that they were all witnesses.

He followed that up with witnessing to the Sanhedrin council that Jesus, who they had crucified, was risen from the dead. The rest of the apostles joined in with Peter in testifying of what they had heard, seen, and knew, that Jesus was alive. They with more than 500 others had personally seen Jesus after his resurrection. He was among them for 40 days and proved he was alive by many infallible proofs.

Therefore, they went from being a depressed group of men who were locked up in a room for fear of the Jews to an ecstatic group that found themselves on the streets of Jerusalem testifying about the resurrection of Jesus.

One of the greatest proofs of his resurrection is that all of the apostles died as martyrs. One being willing to die for something they believe doesn't mean that what they believe is true, however, it does mean that they believe its true. If the apostles had made up the resurrection story they preached, and was later written, surely at least one of them would have confessed of their deception to prevent whatever death awaited them.

However, they all testified through their actions that their testimony was true. They along with those that became followers of Jesus through his ministry and theirs testified wherever they went that Jesus was alive.

Later a man named Paul, the Osama Bin Laden of his day, one who had Christians killed for his beliefs had an encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. He left on his trip with plans to end the lives of Christians, he returned as a witness to the resurrection of Jesus.

As Christians today, we have the same responsibility to spread the good news about the resurrection of Jesus as those that have come before us.

We are witnesses, commissioned to testify that Jesus is not dead but alive, and that his resurrection is proof that everything he said was true. He is the Messiah, the Savior of the world, and that if one were to believe in him they could avoid a devil's hell and have eternal life.

We may not have seen Jesus with our own eyes as the early believers did but we can present some of the same evidence that they did. We have the Bible's testimony, which is easily proven to be divine. The accuracy of Bible prophecy alone proves its source.

The many healings and miracles occurring not only in churches and conventions all over the world, but in grocery stores, athletic fields, in schools, and anywhere else you find Bible believing Christians using the authority of Jesus also prove that Jesus is alive and still working miracles as he did in his time on the earth.

As he said, whatever we ask in his name, he will do it, that we will do the works he did. Sure, some may believe that every miracle is fake, however there are far too many people who will gladly testify of what Jesus did for them to totally ignore.

Lastly, as Christians, each of us is a witness of what Jesus has done in our marriages, bodies, finances, careers, emotions, and other areas of our lives. We must not be ashamed to get in the streets as the early believers did and to testify about what Jesus has done for us.

Resurrection Day is not just a day where we celebrate but a day when we are reminded of our responsibility to be a witness to our world that Jesus is alive and that what he did for us he will do for them as well.

Have a great Holiday!

p.s. we'd love to have you back, although you're no longer a first time visitor but family. And family doesn't get the song sung to them. But one they get to sing it to others and make them smile!
